INSTRUCTOR: Michael Yurkovic, Artisan
PROJECT: Light-Up Console Television

LENGTH OF CLASS: 24 hours

DATE AND TIME: March 12, 9am to 3pm EST
March 13, 9am to 3pm EST
March 19, 9am to 3pm EST
March 20 9am to 3pm EST

Create you very own light-up console television, with rabbit ears! The piece is battery operated so no need to worry about wiring. Screen image is customizable, pick your favorite TV show! Twilight Zone, Brady Bunch, whatever you like! I will size and print out your image to fit the screen. We are going to create the piece in maple. The back is removable to access the battery enclosed in the cabinet along with the light. The piece measures 5” wide by 1 5/8” deep by 2 ½” high, (not including the rabbit ears)

All materials will be provided by the instructor. This includes the maple hardwood for the cabinet, grill material, the molded white screen bezel, and clear vacuum-formed screen among other items. The simple electronic package will be done in by the instructor, ready to install in your TV. Then there’s the Rabbit Ears! The rabbit ears actually have micro telescoping tubing just like the real thing!

Students will learn some basic woodworking techniques while building the cabinet. They will also be familiarized with some of the processes and components pre-made by the instructor. Your instructor will also include a list of recommended suppliers for projects like this and other miniatures you will create in the future (information about wood suppliers, paint and glue recommendations, etc.)

Some experience in making miniatures would be helpful, but I’ll take you through the process step by step so no worries. Students will be asked to bring some basic tools like an X-Acto knife, small cutting board, small scissors, a miter box with saw, and a couple small paint brushes. I will send a personal email to all students well ahead of the class with the final list.

The instructor will 3D print several structural parts ahead of the class, as well as cut and shape most of the Maple hardwood parts so no power tools will be necessary for completions. My last class really enjoyed this!! Building the cabinet is a relatively easy affair, we work our way around a solid structure. This class is designed to be fun and low stress! The piece is finished in the recommended Deft Satin spray finish but it’s your call. If you’d like to choose a different stain, please bring that to class. (please use a water-based stain so drying time will not be an issue) We should be able to complete the project in the allotted time of four 6-hour sessions, with breaks of course!
