INSTRUCTOR: Anne Ogg, Artisan
PROJECT: Project Demonstration: Woodturning tools: Let’s Make One!

LENGTH OF CLASS: 2 hours

DATE AND TIME: Offered March 25, 3 pm to 5 pm EDT

Tool making allows woodturners of miniatures to create the high quality tools they need at a fraction of the cost of ready-made tools in kits. This demonstration will show how to create your own tools.

Following construction of the tool, the demonstrator will show, on a full sized lathe, how it is used to finish the inside of a miniature bowl.

Participants will learn about commonly used woodturning tools, how they cut into wood, how the bevel angle affects the cut, and how to use the tool for a smooth, final cut. Then the participants will learn how to take high speed steel, grind the metal to the desired shape, create a handle, and then see how the newly created tool works!

Anne Ogg is an Artisan, creating replica 18th and 19th century wooden kitchen objects in 1/12 scale. Her interest in making tools came about when she could not find a small scale tool, the negative rake scraper, in a size small enough to use in miniature woodturning.

OPTIONAL Materials Fees*:  HSS blank $5, handle blank $10 - contact the instructor directly for these.

* Students may purchase a High Speed Steel blank and tool handle from the instructor if they wish to try and create their own tool after this class.  (Students will also need to have access to a slow speed grinder, drill and 5/32 drill bit to complete their tool making)

Length of Class: 2 hours

Maximum number of students: 15

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

CLASS FEE: $25

GUILD ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: $5 members / $15 non-members
