INSTRUCTOR: Lynette Barker, Artisan

PROJECT: Sculpting a Bowl/Vase 101 on a Mini Wheel using Air Dry Clay

LENGTH OF CLASS: 3 hours

DATE AND TIME:  Thursday, January 9th 2025, 2pm to 5pm ET

DESCRIPTION:

Lynette will teach you the basic skills needed to sculpt clay on a mini wheel. For this class, she will use air-dry clay, so no kiln is needed. She uses a mini wheel, students must have their own wheel. One can be ordered for the student by the teacher, if requested, within the USA. Projects for this class will be a mixing bowl, a bean pot, and a vase. Individual style is encouraged. Simple, elegant, and 1:12 scale. Finished projects will be about 1 inch tall. No tiny pieces are involved. Lynette will implement a sculpting method that does not require very much water, unlike standard "throwing." This allows for very precise lines and thin edges. Techniques learned will be: centering, opening, shaping by sculpting, "bellying" and finishing a piece on a mini wheel. Lynette's unique sculpting style will be used throughout the class. Using less water also speeds drying time and allows for possible painting and sealing of the projects within the class time. It is expected that students will complete the project(s) within the class time. Each will have enough clay for at least three vases/bowls/pots, and likely more.

Lynette sculpts teapots (that really pour tea!) pitchers with delicate spouts and curlique handles, many elegant shapes of vases, platters and bowls, and unique sculptures. She has even succeeded in sculpting in miniature a Mobius Puzzle and a Mobius Bowl. Later classes will cover more complex subjects, finishes and styles. Materials supplied for class by the instructor will include a tool packet and a small amount of air-dry clay sufficient to complete projects.

Each student must have a mini wheel for class. These can be ordered through the instructor, if you wish. The cost for a mini wheel, including delivery, is $40 USD. Please let the instructor know you would like her to order one for you
