INSTRUCTOR: Lynette Barker, Artisan
PROJECT: Sculpting a Bowl/Vase 101 on a Mini Wheel, No Kiln Needed

LENGTH OF CLASS: 3 hours

DATE AND TIME: Offered via video when you want to take the class

If you did not secure a spot in the class offered May 13 or 16th, this will be the same class but without the interaction with the instructor. You will have the video link and can follow along with a class as they learned.

Lynette will teach you the basic skills needed to sculpt clay on a mini wheel. For this class, she will use air-dry clay. No kiln is needed. She uses a mini wheel, but a full-sized potter's wheel can also be used.

The projects for this class will be a graceful vase and a serving bowl. Curved, smooth and tiny. The scale will be 1:12, so the finished items will be about 1/2 to 1 inch tall. Smaller scales may be attempted. Variation of style is encouraged. Lynette will implement a sculpting method that does not use very much water, unlike standard throwing. This allows for more precise lines and thin edges on your finished projects. Using less water also speeds drying time and allows for possible nail polishing or painting and sealing of the project within the class time. It is expected that students will complete the project of two or more pieces during the class time of 3 hours.

There will be enough clay for at least one vase and one bowl, perhaps more. Lynette sculpts teapots (that really pour tea!) pitchers with delicate spouts and curlicue handles, many elegant shapes of vases, platters and bowls, and unique sculptures. Later classes will cover more complex subjects, finishes and styles. Materials package will include tools needed and a small amount of air-dry clay to complete current project. If you already have the tools needed from a previous class, your materials kit will comprise of three packages of air-dry clay, and a couple of new tools. Please specify if you are a returning student. A link will be included for purchase of additional air-dry clay.
